The Hobbiton Movie Set & Farm Tour is a must-do for every Lord of the Rings fan travelling through New Zealand, but it really is an interesting and entertaining experience for all.


Your tour starts with a drive through the picturesque working sheep farm with spectacular views across the Kaimai Ranges towards the Hobbiton Movie Set.


Your experienced and knowledgeable tour guide will escort you through the ten-acre site of where the LoTR movie set used to be. Your guide will explain all about what was needed to create the Hobbiton set and tell stories about what went on during filming. They will also happily answer any questions you might have. The Hobbiton Movie Set was returned to its natural state after filming was completed. However, hobbit holes and some structures from the film set are still in place.


After visiting Bag End and the other fascinating Hobbiton Movie Set remains, you will be presented with an opportunity to pet and feed the hand-reared sheep and a demonstration by a professional sheep shearer, followed by hand bottle feeding of lambs in which you are invited to participate.


We will explain all about sheep farming and answer any questions you might have. This is your chance to get a real taste of New Zealand farming.


By arrangement for groups we can provide a working sheep dog demonstration.


Total Duration from Matamata Information Centre is 2 hours 30 minutes. Note if you wish to take the tour from The Shires Rest Cafe please select Tour from The Shires Rest Cafe from the tour menu.
